A sneak peek at a lil project me and Erik Svetoft are doing, where we are doing pseudoscientific illustrations, we are trying to compile a bunch of different areas of interest. This is a heart with heart worm, first round will be organs I believe. We may make a zine… Colors subject to change.
Participated in the Young One’s ad competition last year, and got second place. Pretty awesome opportunity, but we were supposed to redesign Stride gum to appeal to a younger audience because they were underselling to teens, so me and a team came up with illustrative motifs that would go inside and out of the package to differentiate it on the rack and give it a more teenage feel. I guess they took the idea, because shortly after I started seeing illustrations inside and out of the Stride packs, thanks guys.

MEXICO & SOUTHWEST U.S.: PATTERN ILLUSTRATION: LLEW MEJIA
Llew Mejia grew up traveling between Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Naturally these two cultures had their effect on the illustrator and designer. Mejia says, "I saw a lot of Mexican folk artisans growing up and always admired their work ethic and master brush control." Though the illustrator’s inspiration is not limited to these two countries. He is influenced by the world and says, “I take what I like and add it to my visual library.” This ‘library’ includes book on magic and the supernatural, in addition to scientific specimens.
Oddly enough, Mejia first went to school to become a plastic surgeon. “Which is hilarious,” he says “because I’m the polar opposite of that now. I guess they both work with their hands in a meticulous way?” I think the message here is not to be afraid of changing your path completely because the result can be quite beautiful.

I started drawing a Green Tree Python, but then it kind of took off into some occult stuff, touching up on some more symbolism from Rosicrucians, the Priory of Sion as well as some Alchemy textbooks I was looking over.

Fig. 1: A harem of Vampire Bats. Vampire Bats are unique because of their sense of familial bonds and at times in order to save a starving member will regurgitate blood for them. The harems are mostly made of females but usually have a few resident males, and at times they are so kind to let in non-resident males for communal purposes.
Fig. 2: An enormous amount of industry has been formed around the droppings of bat’s, also known widely as guano. It has a high nitrogen content and in turn is a great fertilizer for plant life. Balls like this one will be rolled up by Dung Beetles on the cave floor.
Fig. 3: The white blood cell is an aggressive blood cell used to eliminate intruders of the body. Vampire Bat’s have what is called hematophagia or a need to feed on blood, due to it’s high protein and lipid content, as well as being more naturally abundant and easy to acquire than other food sources.

The Dodo(Raphus cucullatus) is an extinct flightless bird that inhabited the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. When foreign sailors came to the island they fed on the Dodo as well as their domestic animals that they brought with them, this is one of many reasons the bird went extinct. Dodos oddly enough are related to Pigeons and Doves, which makes sense when you take a step back. The Dodo also fed on a tree nicknamed the Dodo tree (Sideroxylon grandiflorum).
This tree’s survival depended on the Dodo for the seeds of the tree would only germinate with the help of the Dodo’s digestive tract…It is believed there are only 13 trees left of this type and all of them are thought to be at least 300 years old, the trees do not have growth rings so no one really knows… They also fed on worms!
Anyway it was fun drawing a Dodo.

Part of a pattern project called, 101FLORALS that I did all last year that involved choosing a species of plant and creating a pattern out of it each week.
This one is the Morning Glory, and along with it are the three stages moths go through from Larva to Pupa to Imago. Specifically the Cecropia Moth.
